Mid Coast Piling, a division of the East Coast Piling Group, specialises in bored piers installed using augers for residential, commercial and owner-builder projects across the Mid Coast to Port Macquarie, NSW.

Bored piers are used in both shallow and deeper foundation systems and are constructed in accordance with engineering design and geotechnical information, based on the ground conditions encountered.

When Bored Piers Are Used

Bored piers are commonly specified where a piered footing system is required and where loads need to be transferred into suitable soil or rock.

They may be used where:

• Ground conditions are variable

• Reactive soils are present

• Firm or dense founding material is required

• Settlement control is critical

Bored piers are replacement piles, formed by removing spoil and constructing a reinforced concrete pier in situ.

Bored Piers to Rock Boring

Bored piers are installed using augers fitted with standard tungsten teeth, suitable for normal boring through clays, sands and general earth materials.

When harder ground or rock is encountered, the auger tooling is upgraded for rock boring, including the use of multi-facet tungsten (MFT) teeth.
Where competent rock is present, boring may further transition to core barrels to achieve the required founding level.

This progression allows bored piers to be completed correctly based on the actual ground conditions encountered.

Geotechnical Requirements

Where ground conditions change or rock is encountered, a geotechnical report is required to identify the soil and rock profile.

Geotechnical information confirms the type of material being bored and allows the appropriate tooling and founding approach to be selected in accordance with engineering requirements.
